4CU May Update

Greetings 4CU Members!

Happy May! I don’t know about you, but there is something magical that happens in May. Well into spring, the glorious changes in the trees as they leaf out, blooming cacti, oleanders, Mexican Bird of Paradise, and longer hours of daylight give new energy and promise. May Day (May 1), while not celebrated in the US has it’s roots in ancient agricultural festivals and the modern International Workers’ Day, which commemorates the 1886 Haymarket affair in Chicago, where workers struck for an eight-hour workday. Yeah for that!

May is also a must for Airstream travel. Get out there and see the beauty all around us while meeting up with friends at rallies. The summer and fall rally schedule affords loads of opportunities to hit the road. Coming up next is Bryce Canyon – wow! If you’ve been there, go again. If you have not visited it, put it on your must do list, because it has got to be among the top 5 gorgeous places in the US. And planning ahead, don’t forget the back-to-back Chama and Angel Fire rallies in June!

In this edition, we welcome two new affiliate member couples to our community, give you a big update from our rally committee, a rally review from the hosts of Spring Break at the Ranch, and introduce our new recipe favorite!

Rally Roundup

Spring Break at the Ranch

by: Kathy Fahey

Airstream rally hosts at a Four Corners Unit Airstream club rally at Cottonwood Arizona.

Spring Break at the Ranch was a blast!  We had 13 trailers in the beautiful group site at Dead Horse Ranch State Park in Cottonwood, AZ.  That early heat wave in March was followed in April with mild temperatures, periodic breezes, and one rainy night when everyone was tucked into bed.  You can’t order anything prettier than sunsets in Arizona.

Thank you to everyone for the generous food donations for the local food pantry in Cottonwood.  We brought bags and boxes loaded with canned and dry goods to the Old Town Mission Food Pantry and Resourse Center. Each person who donated had an entry in a drawing.

Dan Fahey is a ceramic artist who specializes in whimsical birds among other things.  His “birdie num-num” series offers travelers a companion to brighten each day on the road.  He used 4CU colors on this num-num.  Congratulations Sandy Brogan on your win!

Our 26 rallyers had lots of opportunities to talk with everyone. Our light breakfast gatherings set the tone for engagement throughout the days. Our book club leader and co-host, Tom Balchak (Colorado Unit) guided our lively discussion of The Drift Fence, by Zane Grey. Thanks Tom! Everyone enjoyed the book, including the setting in the Cottonwood/Flagstaff areas, memorable characters, and interesting themes about the development of the west. We followed it up the next evening with the movie, which prompted a lot more interaction about how Hollywood changed up most of the story! Leave it to Hollywood to mess up a good read!!

Friday night we feasted on prime rib and shrimp, baked potato with fixins, salad and cheesecake. A special thank you to John Lorec for slow roasting the 26 pounds (!) of prime rib on his Weber grill.  The pictures included here will make your mouth water!

Games bring people together and our Left-Center-Right game did just that. After two rousing rounds, all players were $6 dollars poorer. Kathy Fahey was very lucky to win both games. The donuts Sunday morning from Sedonuts hopefully made up for that!

Left Centre Right and Cornhole tournaments were a big hit at the Deadhorse Airstream Rally in Arizona.

There is so much to do in Cottonwood, Sedona, Jerome, and surrounding areas that it was hard to keep track of everyone’s activities through the weekend.  Pickleball, driving tours, ancient ruins, wine tasting, shopping, hiking, bike rides, bird watching at the lagoons and relaxing around the camp site made for a busy weekend.  But everyone came to roost in the late afternoons to enjoy the company of the other campers.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH

This is a new additional to our monthly update! Feel free to submit a favorite recipe that you make at a rally. Our very first recipe was from our Spring Break at the Ranch rally at Dead Horse Ranch State Park. Delicious!

Mix thoroughly
I cup sugar
2 tablespoons soft butter
1 egg

Stir in
1/4 cup water
